Welcome to Motley Woods! I hope you enjoy browsing through the gallery of pens I’ve created, and consider adding one to your collection. I love making beautiful pens, but I also strive to make sure they are both durable and usable for your everyday needs.
I make all of my pens by hand, using Premo and Kato brand oven-cured modeling clay, worked with a variety of powders, tools, and techniques, some of which I share in the Tutorials section of this website.
You’ll see how nature and mathematics are inspirations for my work, but I also draw from a wide variety of techniques used with other materials including:
- Hand-building of clay
- Carving of wood, clay, and stone
- Lathe-turned wood and resin
- Millefiori Italian glassmaking
- Mokume game Japanese metalworking
Every pen is finished with a durable coating that protects it from drops and scratches, and every pen is refillable using appropriate refills listed on that pen’s page.
